# Code of Conduct
## Our standard
Participants must keep technical debate respectful, specific, and focused on evidence. Harassment, threats, discriminatory conduct, doxxing, deliberate credential exposure, and sexualized or degrading communication are not acceptable.
## Research integrity
Contributors must describe limitations, preserve reproducibility, avoid fabricated results, disclose relevant conflicts, and never submit live credentials or personal data as test fixtures. Security testing must remain within systems and data the contributor is authorized to assess.
## Enforcement
Project maintainers may edit or remove content, close contributions, restrict participation, or escalate credible safety concerns. Report conduct concerns through the private project contact channel rather than a public issue when disclosure could harm a participant.

# Contributing
AAISA welcomes public research contributions through issues and pull requests. Contributions must preserve the project's defensive, local-first, evidence-first boundaries.
## Development setup
```bash
python3 -m venv .venv
source .venv/bin/activate
python -m pip install -e .
python -m unittest discover -s tests -v
```
No external dependency is required for the foundation. Discuss new runtime dependencies before adding them.
## Contribution workflow
1. Open or select an issue that describes the research question or defect.
2. Create a focused branch from `main`.
3. Add implementation, positive tests, negative tests, and documentation.
4. Run the full unit-test suite and a scan of `examples/`.
5. Open a pull request using the repository template.
6. Address review comments and keep commits focused and attributable.
## Rule proposal requirements
Every new rule must document:
- threat or policy condition;
- supported artifact classes;
- deterministic detection logic;
- evidence and redaction behavior;
- severity rationale;
- remediation guidance;
- known false positives and evasion limits;
- positive, negative, and ambiguous tests;
- expected performance on large artifacts.
Rules must not execute scanned content, access the network, modify source files, or place full credential values in reports.
## Commit guidance
Use a concise imperative subject, such as `Add SPDX provenance rule`. Keep unrelated changes separate. Reference the relevant issue in the pull request.
## Review standard
Maintainers evaluate correctness, tests, safety invariants, research reproducibility, report compatibility, performance, and documentation. Security-sensitive changes may require a private review before public discussion.

# Governance
The dTech Technology and Research Initiative stewards AAISA. Maintainers merge changes, manage releases, enforce security and conduct policies, and document material architecture decisions.
Technical decisions are made through reviewable issues and pull requests. Changes to security invariants, artifact schemas, report compatibility, plugin execution, network behavior, or data handling require an architecture decision record and maintainer approval.
Public contributors may propose, implement, test, document, and review work. Repository write access does not grant authority to disclose vulnerabilities, publish releases, change project policy, or represent the Initiative.
The project will publish release notes, known limitations, and evaluation methods. Maintainers may revert a change that violates a security invariant even after merge.

# advanced-artifactual-intelligence-security-agent
# Advanced Artifactual Intelligence Security Agent
An open, defensive research project building an evidence-first AI security agent that inspects software, model, prompt, dataset, configuration, and supply-chain artifacts for secrets, unsafe instructions, weak provenance, dependency risk, and policy violations. The agent operates locally by default, produces auditable JSON and SARIF findings, and is designed for human review and community-authored rules.
Advanced Artifactual Intelligence Security Agent (AAISA) is an open, defensive research foundation for inspecting the artifacts that surround AI systems: source code, prompts, model metadata, dependency manifests, configuration, datasets, and operational records.
AAISA is evidence-first. Every finding identifies the rule, severity, artifact, location, and a redacted explanation. The foundation is local by default, performs no autonomous remediation, makes no outbound network requests, and supports both JSON and SARIF output for human review and tooling integration.
## Research status
This repository begins in **Public Contributing** status. It is a research foundation, not a claim of production-grade detection or complete security coverage. Contributors should treat every result as evidence to review, not as an automated verdict.
## Current capabilities
- Safe recursive discovery with configurable exclusions, size limits, and no symlink traversal
- SHA-256 evidence for every scanned artifact
- Extensible rule protocol and built-in defensive rules
- Detection of likely embedded secrets with matched values redacted
- Detection of common prompt-injection and tool-exfiltration instructions
- Detection of unpinned Python dependencies and mutable container image tags
- Validation of model and dataset provenance metadata
- JSON and SARIF 2.1.0 reports
- Deterministic local CLI with documented exit codes
- Standard-library-only runtime and unit-test suite
## Quick start
AAISA requires Python 3.11 or newer and has no runtime dependencies.
```bash
python3 -m venv .venv
source .venv/bin/activate
python -m pip install -e .
aaisa rules
aaisa scan ./examples --format json --output report.json
```
Run directly from a checkout without installing:
```bash
PYTHONPATH=src python -m aaisa scan ./examples
```
Exit codes are stable: `0` means the scan completed without findings at or above the configured threshold, `1` means findings met the threshold, and `2` means the command or scan could not complete.
## Configuration
Create a documented starter configuration:
```bash
aaisa init-config --output aaisa.toml
```
The default configuration excludes version-control and build directories, limits each artifact to 2 MiB, and reports findings at low severity or higher. See [`aaisa.example.toml`](aaisa.example.toml).
## Safety model
AAISA is intentionally constrained:
- It reads artifacts and writes reports only.
- It does not execute scanned code, prompts, models, or data.
- It does not follow symbolic links.
- It does not transmit artifact content.
- It redacts matched secret values from reports.
- It does not change or delete source artifacts.
- It requires a human to decide whether and how to remediate a finding.
See [`docs/THREAT_MODEL.md`](docs/THREAT_MODEL.md) and [`SECURITY.md`](SECURITY.md) before using AAISA with sensitive material.

## Development
```bash
python -m unittest discover -s tests -v
PYTHONPATH=src python -m aaisa scan examples --format json
```
All changes should include tests for new behavior. Detection rules must document intent, evidence, likely false positives, and remediation guidance. Rules that expose matched credentials, execute artifacts, or make network requests will not be accepted into the default rule set.

# Research Brief
## Project identity
**Title:** Advanced Artifactual Intelligence Security Agent
**Status:** Public Contributing
**Short name:** AAISA
**Steward:** dTech Technology and Research Initiative
## Public description
An open, defensive research project building an evidence-first AI security agent that inspects software, model, prompt, dataset, configuration, and supply-chain artifacts for secrets, unsafe instructions, weak provenance, dependency risk, and policy violations. The agent operates locally by default, produces auditable JSON and SARIF findings, and is designed for human review and community-authored rules.
## Research problem
AI systems are assembled from more than executable code. Their security posture also depends on prompts, model cards, serialized weights, dataset manifests, dependency locks, deployment configuration, agent tool definitions, evaluation records, and provenance statements. These artifacts often cross trust boundaries, change at different rates, and are reviewed by different teams. Conventional application scanners cover portions of this surface but rarely preserve a single evidence model across AI-specific and software supply-chain artifacts.
AAISA investigates whether a constrained, explainable security agent can normalize these artifacts, apply transparent policies, and produce useful evidence without executing untrusted content or sending it to an external service.
## Central hypothesis
A local-first, rule-driven agent with explicit provenance, redaction, and human review boundaries can improve early detection of AI-system security risks while remaining auditable enough for research reproduction and contributor scrutiny.
## Objectives
1. Define a stable artifact and finding model that works across code, prompts, manifests, model metadata, datasets, and operational configuration.
2. Build a safe ingestion layer that hashes artifacts, enforces size limits, avoids symbolic-link traversal, and never executes inspected content.
3. Establish an extensible policy interface for deterministic rules and future isolated analyzers.
4. Produce portable JSON and SARIF evidence suitable for review, comparison, and integration.
5. Measure precision, recall, runtime, reproducibility, and analyst usefulness on transparent benchmark corpora.
6. Develop contribution, governance, disclosure, and rule-quality standards appropriate for an open security project.
## Initial research scope
The foundation covers local text artifacts and metadata. Initial rules examine likely embedded secrets, prompt-injection language, mutable dependencies, container tag ambiguity, and missing provenance fields. The first release deliberately avoids model execution, malware detonation, active exploitation, automatic remediation, network reconnaissance, and opaque risk scoring.
## Research questions
- Which artifact types and normalized attributes are required to express AI-specific security evidence without losing source context?
- Which deterministic rules provide useful early warning with acceptable false-positive rates?
- How should prompt-injection evidence be distinguished from benign documentation, test fixtures, and quoted attack examples?
- What provenance fields are minimally sufficient for models and datasets?
- How can community-authored rules be tested for safety, performance, redaction, and reproducibility?
- When should future probabilistic analyzers be allowed, and how should their confidence and model provenance be represented?
## Foundation architecture
The initial system has five layers:
1. **Discovery** enumerates regular files beneath approved paths while enforcing exclusions, size limits, and link boundaries.
2. **Normalization** records artifact type, path, size, SHA-256 digest, media type, and safely decoded text when supported.
3. **Policy evaluation** runs independent rules against immutable artifact evidence.
4. **Reporting** serializes redacted findings and scan metadata to JSON or SARIF 2.1.0.
5. **Human decision** remains outside the agent. The foundation reports evidence but does not modify artifacts or declare a system safe.
## Methodology
Research proceeds through versioned rules and public benchmark fixtures. Each rule proposal must include a threat statement, detection logic, expected evidence, remediation guidance, negative tests, positive tests, and known false-positive cases. Evaluations will use seeded and naturally occurring benign samples with secrets replaced by nonfunctional fixtures. Results will be recorded by rule version and corpus digest so another contributor can reproduce them.
## Evaluation plan
The project will track:
- precision and recall per rule and artifact class;
- false positives per thousand artifacts;
- scan throughput and peak memory by corpus size;
- deterministic report equality across repeated runs;
- percentage of findings with complete location, evidence, and remediation fields;
- redaction failures, which are release-blocking defects;
- analyst ratings for clarity, actionability, and time saved.
No aggregate score will conceal per-rule performance. Benchmark limitations and excluded artifact classes will be published with results.
## Safety and ethics
AAISA is a defensive research tool. The default implementation does not execute artifacts, make network requests, exploit targets, recover secret values, or apply automatic remediation. Reports redact matched credentials and should still be handled as sensitive security material. Test corpora must not contain live credentials, personal data without authorization, or malicious payloads that require execution.
Future active or probabilistic capabilities require a separate design review, explicit opt-in configuration, isolation controls, and documented evaluation. A finding is evidence of a condition to investigate, not proof of compromise. A clean report is not proof that a system is secure.
## Contributor workstreams
- Artifact schemas and parsers
- Rule engine and rule-quality tooling
- AI prompt and agent-configuration security
- Model and dataset provenance
- Software supply-chain and deployment policy
- SARIF and interoperability
- Benchmark corpora and evaluation science
- Privacy, redaction, and secure report handling
- Documentation, accessibility, and contributor experience
## Milestones
**Milestone 1 Foundation:** stable CLI, artifact model, built-in rules, JSON and SARIF reporting, tests, threat model, and contribution standards.
**Milestone 2 Evaluation harness:** versioned benchmark format, corpus digests, per-rule metrics, performance measurements, and regression thresholds.
**Milestone 3 Artifact expansion:** structured parsers for model cards, dataset manifests, agent tool definitions, SBOM formats, and selected deployment descriptors.
**Milestone 4 Controlled intelligence:** research optional probabilistic analyzers behind explicit isolation, provenance, confidence, and reproducibility requirements.
**Milestone 5 Pilot validation:** conduct approved, non-production pilots; publish limitations, measured results, and a production-readiness gap assessment.
## Foundation acceptance criteria
The foundation is complete when a clean checkout can run its tests with Python 3.11 or newer, scan the included examples without network access, emit schema-valid JSON and SARIF, redact secret matches, avoid symbolic-link traversal, return documented exit codes, and provide enough governance and technical documentation for a new contributor to propose a tested rule.
## Expected outputs
- A public Git repository with source, tests, examples, and contributor templates
- A reproducible command-line reference implementation
- A documented evidence schema and extension contract
- An open threat model and research roadmap
- Versioned research results and benchmark methodology in later milestones
## Licensing and governance
Source code is licensed under Apache License 2.0. Contributions are reviewed through pull requests. Security-sensitive reports follow the private disclosure process in `SECURITY.md`. Maintainers may reject rules that execute inspected content, expose secrets, introduce undisclosed network behavior, or cannot be tested reproducibly.

# Security Policy
## Reporting a vulnerability
Do not open a public issue for a vulnerability that could expose credentials, sensitive artifacts, repository access, or a practical bypass of a security invariant. Use the private contact channel published by the dTech Technology and Research Initiative and include the affected version, reproduction steps, impact, and a safe proof of concept.
Do not include live credentials, personal data, proprietary artifacts, or weaponized payloads. Maintainers will acknowledge a complete report, coordinate validation and remediation, and publish a disclosure when affected users can act safely.
## Supported versions
The project is pre-alpha. Security fixes target the latest `main` revision until the first tagged release policy is published.
## Safe-use notice
AAISA findings require human review. A clean report does not establish that a system is secure. Generated reports may disclose file paths and security context and should be stored and shared accordingly.

# Architecture
## Design goals
AAISA prioritizes inspectability, deterministic evidence, safe handling of untrusted artifacts, and low barriers for research contributors. The initial implementation uses only the Python standard library and keeps discovery, normalization, policy evaluation, and reporting separate.
## Data flow
```text
approved path
|
v
safe discovery -> immutable artifact evidence -> independent rules -> filtered findings
|
v
JSON or SARIF
|
v
human review
```
## Trust boundaries
The scan root is untrusted input. File names, content, encodings, and metadata can be malicious. AAISA therefore does not execute artifacts, does not follow symbolic links, applies a size limit before reading content, decodes text with replacement, and isolates rule failures as scan errors.
The configuration and enabled-rule set are trusted operator inputs. Reports are security-sensitive outputs even though known secret matches are redacted.
## Extension contract
A rule exposes an identifier, title, description, default severity, and an `evaluate(artifact)` method. It returns zero or more immutable findings. A rule must be deterministic for the same artifact and configuration, must not mutate the artifact, must not perform network access, and must never place a matched credential value into a finding.
Future parser and analyzer plugins will require a versioned interface and explicit isolation policy before they are loaded dynamically.
## Evidence model
Each artifact records a relative path, class, media type, byte size, and SHA-256 digest. Each finding records its rule, severity, message, artifact path, optional location, redacted evidence, remediation guidance, and tags. The report adds tool version, timestamps, root, summary counts, and nonfatal errors.
## Non-goals
The foundation is not a sandbox, endpoint protection product, malware-analysis environment, vulnerability exploit framework, or autonomous remediation system. It does not prove that an artifact is safe.

# Threat Model
## Assets to protect
- Credentials and sensitive content inside scanned artifacts
- Integrity of source artifacts
- Integrity and confidentiality of generated reports
- Operator workstation availability
- Reproducibility of research results
## Adversary capabilities
An adversary may control file names, directory depth, encodings, content, sizes, symbolic links, prompt text, configuration-like syntax, and misleading metadata inside the approved scan root. An adversary may attempt resource exhaustion, path escape, credential disclosure through reports, rule evasion, or false-positive flooding.
## Security controls in the foundation
- Symbolic links are not traversed.
- Only regular files are discovered.
- Per-file size limits are enforced before content is read.
- Artifacts are read, never executed or imported.
- No rule performs network access.
- Credential-shaped matches are replaced with category-only redacted evidence.
- Findings preserve source paths and hashes for review.
- Rule selection is explicit and unknown rule identifiers fail closed.
- Scan errors produce a distinct exit code.
## Residual risks
- Large numbers of small files can still consume time and memory.
- Unicode control characters and deceptive file names can confuse a human reviewer.
- Pattern rules can miss obfuscated risks and flag benign examples.
- The current process does not sandbox rule code; built-in rules are trusted code.
- Reports can reveal file names, repository structure, and nonsecret security context.
- SHA-256 establishes content identity, not trustworthiness.
## Required future controls
Before accepting third-party executable plugins, the project must define signing, capability restrictions, time and memory budgets, process isolation, dependency policy, and a plugin evidence schema. Before any cloud or model-backed analyzer is introduced, the project must define consent, data minimization, retention, provider trust, prompt-injection boundaries, model provenance, and offline fallback behavior.
## Security invariants
1. Default scans do not transmit artifact content.
2. Default scans do not modify source artifacts.
3. Reports do not contain full matched secrets.
4. Untrusted artifacts are never executed.
5. A successful scan is not represented as proof of security.
